Message from the Director

Welcome and thank you for your interest in the University of Utah's General Psychiatry Rural Idaho Track. Our goal is simple: to provide residents with exceptional clinical training in both an academic and rural environment that is supportive and conducive to learning. Our program will be rigorous yet collegial, with the education of our residents and the care of patients as our highest priorities.

We know that choosing a residency program—finding the right environment and place where you can thrive personally and develop into the physician you aspire to be—is a very important decision. Residents in the rural track will be provided exclusive opportunities to develop into skillful clinicians, advocates, and leaders through specialized rotations and close mentorship. The narrative of our program will be told by the experiences and successes of the residents who chose to be a part of the gallant effort to increase access to mental healthcare in and around Southeastern Idaho. We are hopeful that our program will be represented by residents of diverse backgrounds, experiences and strengths who are dedicated to improving themselves and the communities in which they live.

Residents will recognize our commitment to learning as they as they attend a full day of didactics every week. These lectures will predominantly be the same as those given to the residents of the General Residency Program in Salt Lake City and will be transmitted live electronically during years 3 and 4 while in Pocatello, Idaho. In addition to didactics, we will strongly encourage residents to become self-motivated and independent learners through professional development, research or other scholarly activity in areas of particular interest to them. We are also devoted to providing a balance of training in biologic management of psychiatric illness as well as psychotherapy.

In addition to excellent training opportunities our residents will be able to take advantage of world class recreational amenities. Access to the outdoors while living in Utah or Idaho is hard to beat. We are confident that the educational and recreational opportunities you are looking for can be found in the University of Utah Rural Idaho Track.

We welcome your interest in our program, please contact our department to learn more.
