Application Process

The University of Utah's General Psychiatry Residency Program offers 14 PGY-1 positions, including two research track positions, and three rural Idaho track positions. All positions are filled through the National Resident Matching Program and applications are accepted only through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS)®, which transmits residency applications, letters of recommendation, Dean's Letters, transcripts, and other supporting credentials to residency training programs. Applications must be received through ERAS by December 15th of the year prior to the scheduled starting of PGY-1 year. We review each application individually, and we encourage you to apply if you are interested in our program.

As our committee reviews applications, we will limit our sending out of new interview invitations to Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. Invited applicants will have three full business days to respond to the invitation, although there may be more options of dates for those who reply more quickly.

Required application materials to be submitted to ERAS include the following:

  • ERAS online application form
  • Personal statement (please limit to one page)
  • Dean's letter
  • Medical school transcript
  • Three or four letters of recommendation
  • Curriculum vitae
  • USMLE score reports (Please remember that we must have results from USMLE step 1 and step 2 CK before the rank deadline.) No more than two attempts for a passing score
  • COMLEX transcript is accepted for osteopathic graduates
  • ECFMG certificate, if applicable

International Medical Graduate Requirements

Applications will only be accepted through ERAS. International medical graduates should apply through the ECFMG office. See instructions at AAMC’s Website or contact the ECFMG office for further information.

In general, most of the international medical graduates we interview meet the following requirements:

  • Green card, J-1 Visa (not sponsored) or documentation of US citizenship
  • Valid ECFMG certificate with Clinical Skills Assessment certification
  • Evidence of a minimum of one year of clinical experience in the United States including two letters of recommendation from academic physicians with whom you have worked

Interview Process

All interviews will be conducted virtually for the current year. Interviews will be scheduled on Mondays, beginning in mid-October through late January. On the Sunday prior to your interview date, there will be a virtual social on Sunday evening with some of the current residents in our program. This is optional, but we strongly recommend attending as it is a good opportunity to talk to a number of our residents in a more informal setting.  Interviews will consist of meetings with the program director, other program leadership, faculty members, chief residents, and current residents.

Applicants being considered for the Research Track or Idaho Rural Track will also participate in these Monday interviews. There will also be an additional Tuesday half-day interview for applicants being considered for the Research Track.

The University of Utah School of Medicine does not discriminate on the basis of sex, race, age, religion, color, national origin, sexual orientation, disability, or veteran's status.

IN-PERSON SECOND LOOK DAYS

Monday, February 12, 2024
Friday, February 16, 2024

We are excited to announce that we will be hosting two completely optional Second Look opportunities following the completion of our interview season. During this time, there will be informational sessions on our programs and life in Utah, facility tours, and opportunities to meet and interact with our residents, faculty and staff. Shortly, we will be emailing an invitation to all applicants who have interviewed with us, or are scheduled to interview with us through the end of January. This email will include additional information about the Second Look days, as well as an anonymous sign-up link for applicants will are interested, so that we can get an accurate (but anonymous) count for meals, room scheduling, etc.

Please note: These Second Look days have been intentionally scheduled after our internal deadline for finalizing our rank lists. Attendance at either of the Second Look dates will NOT have any bearing on our program's rank list(s). These dates are offered as an option for applicants if they feel it would be individually helpful for them to get an in-person feel for the program and/or city before finalizing their personal rank lists.
