Application Process

The University of Utah's General Psychiatry Residency Program offers 15 PGY-1 positions, including two research track, and four rural (Idaho) track positions. All positions are filled through the National Resident Matching Program and applications are accepted only through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS)®.

The Rural Idaho Track is a separate ERAS code. To apply to the Idaho Rural Track, applicants must select the University of Utah: Psychiatry/Rural Idaho Track (Categorical) on ERAS. To be considered for the general program, applicants would apply to the University of Utah: Psychiatry (Categorical) on ERAS.

As these are two separate ERAS codes, a separate ranking system is in place for the Rural Idaho track and general program when interviews are offered and when rank lists are completed by the program. Applicants will rank both the general program and Rural Idaho track separately on their rank list if they choose to apply to both.

Applications must be received by December 8th of the year prior to the scheduled start of PGY-1 year. Each application is reviewed individually and holistically. The University of Utah School of Medicine does not discriminate based on sex, race, age, religion, color, national origin, sexual orientation, disability, or veteran status.

Interview Process

Interviews are held via Zoom and scheduled on Mondays from 8am until 4pm. Please plan to attend (also via Zoom) a "virtual dinner" and socializing on Sunday evening with residents. A sample interview schedule would be interviewing with faculty and residents on Monday morning/afternoon, a lunch meeting with residents, and a virtual tour of Salt Lake City neighborhoods and training sites.
