Integrated Care Concentration
The Integrated Care Concentration is for residents interested in learning more about Mental Health Integration models and best practices. Integrated care is rapidly growing nationally as an effective way to improve mental health access points and whole-person care. The general approach and treatment concepts in integrated care are novel and can take a great deal of time to grasp, and adequate training is a must. There are a number of career pathways that include integrated care practices, and training our next generation of mental health professionals in these models is critical for workforce development and sustainability.
The Integrated Care Concentration aims to introduce residents to these models of care early in their training during the first and second years, where there is currently no exposure to these models. It will also provide opportunities for senior residents to build upon the knowledge and skills they obtain during their required Mental Health Integration (MHI) and Collaborative Care Model (CoCM) rotations. Additionally, residents in the Integrated Care concentration will participate in one scholarly project related to integrated care and serve as senior residents or “junior faculty” on an advanced MHI rotation in the PGY-4 year.
MENTAL HEALTH INTEGRATION (MHI) ROTATIONS:
-
MHI rotation in PGY-3: All psychiatry residents complete 12 months of one half-day in this rotation (six months for research track and triple board residents).
-
Each clinic location is unique in terms of the populations served and can provide a broad range of experiences for residents.
-
Current MHI clinic locations: Student Health at Madsen, Family Medicine at Madsen, Farmington, Stansbury, Sugarhouse, South Jordan, Redwood, Greenwood, Centerville, and Westridge
-
-
Collaborative Care Model (CoCM) rotation in PGY-4 – all psychiatry residents complete six months of this one half-day per week rotation.
-
Current CoCM clinic rotations: Redwood/Greenwood/Redstone; Westridge/SJHC/Pediatrics; Parkway/Farmington/Stansbury; Women’s health (OB); and Sugarhouse/UH/Madsen IM
-
Concentration requirements:
- Be active in concentration activities for at least two consecutive years during training. Concentration requirements by year are outlined in the table below.

Participate in one additional half-day MHI or CoCM elective for 6 months during the PGY-3 or 4 years:
-
The elective can be done in parallel with the required PGY-3 MHI and PGY-4 CoCM rotations, or some other time during training
-
Research track and triple board residents will have the ability to negotiate the timing and duration of this rotation, given their unique schedules.
-
-
Participate in one advanced MHI rotation (aka junior faculty rotation) for 6 months during the PGY-4 year under direct supervision from Dr. Rachel Weir, Chief of Mental Health Integration for the Huntsman Mental Health Institute (HMHI) at the University of Utah.
-
Research track and triple board residents will have the ability to negotiate the timing and duration of this rotation, given their unique schedules.
-
