Department of Psychiatry Grand Rounds

Medical students are always welcome to attend the Department of Psychiatry Grand Rounds series which are generally held on the first and third Wednesdays at noon, beginning September through May. This guest lecture series is held in-person at the Huntsman Mental Health Institute (HMHI) in the Branch Auditorium. 

PsychSIGN-Utah

The U of U SOM psychiatry student interest group has scheduled talks and discussions about topics of interest in psychiatry as well as information regarding psychiatry as a residency and career choice. PsychSIGN is run by medical students, with faculty and resident support. 

The American Psychiatric Association (APA)

One of the oldest medical specialty organizations in the country, the APA provides free membership and journal subscriptions for medical students. Please visit their website for more information. 

Psychiatry Clinical Shadowing Program

We are pleased to offer opportunities for learners to gain exposure to the field of psychiatry at University of Utah Health. While interest in this program is high, availability is extremely limited, and priority is given to University of Utah-affiliated learners. We do our best to accommodate as many individuals as possible.

Learners may request experiences with Adult Psychiatry or Child and Adolescent Psychiatry in both inpatient and outpatient settings.

  • U.S.-affiliated Learners: Eligible for up to 12 hours of clinical shadowing.
  • International Medical Students & International Medical Residents: Eligible for 2–4 week elective experiences, depending on availability.

Shadowing Opportunities Available Beginning January 2026

Shadowing Experience

  • Limit of 12 hours per year
  • Observation ONLY (no patient care), under sponsor supervision
  • NO Clinical Training Agreement (CTA) required

Must Submit: 

  • Complete Shadow Application, requires Department Approval
  • HIPPA Training
  • Visitor Confidentiality Agreement
  • Immunizations

Clinical Training Elective Experience

  • 2-4 Weeks
  • Hands-on Training, (within the scope of the role), under the supervision of a preceptor
  • Clinical Training Agreement (CTA) Required

Must Submit: 

  • HIPPA Training
  • Visitor Confidentiality Agreement
  • Immunizations

Required:

  • Background Check
  • Drug Screen
  • Student Orientation
  • Proof of Liability Insurance
  • COVID Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Attestation
  • Obtain ID Badge
  • BLS Certification (if required for the specific training roles)

Request Deadlines per Quarter

  • Q1: December 15th (January-March)
  • Q2: March 15th (April-June)
  • Q3: August 15th (July-September)
  • Q4: September 15th (October-December)

PLEASE NOTE: Our department faculty cannot accept learners or confirm experiences/opportunities directly. Please do not email faculty members regarding placement. All requests must be submitted through the link above. If you have a personal or professional connection with a specific faculty member, please include their name in your request form.

You will receive an email within 15 days of the request deadline for your selected quarter(s) notifying you whether you have been accepted, waitlisted, or declined based on available opportunities. If accepted, a department coordinator will reach out to guide you through the next steps of the submission process.
