Top 12 Reasons to Train at the U of U

  1. Integration: Residents get six months of pediatric training each year for the first four years, alternating with six months of psychiatry or child psychiatry.
  2. Our Residents: Utah is privileged to get residents who are highly qualified. Our residents have a very good reputation.
  3. Support: There is a tradition of supporting each other, which comes with a small program. This includes retreats every six months, social gatherings, and backup when you need it.
  4. Pediatrics: The University of Utah has one of the top pediatric programs in the country.
  5. Child Psychiatry: Our program has the best clinical training sites in the country, including 16 specialized training venues.
  6. General Psychiatry Attendings: Our psychiatry department allows us to schedule with attendings who are highly supportive of the triple board program.
  7. Board Preparation: Our psychiatry program includes a monthly mock board class with a National Examiner, practice mock boards, and resident supported study groups for written exams.
  8. Stability: We are one of the original founding Triple Board programs established in 1986, and we have many alumni in this area of the country.
  9. Leadership: Dr. Gray has been the Training Director since 1999. Dr. Kleinschmit is the Assistant Training Director, and our Chief Residents go the extra mile.
  10. Developing Expertise: You will pick a topic that is interesting to you,and our faculty will help you to develop expertise in that area, prior to graduation.
  11. The Last Year: The fifth year is a variety of outpatient child psychiatry rotations, with no call, and every weekend off. You will build your own practice, with good supervision.
  12. The Outdoors: Salt Lake City outdoor opportunities (skiing, hiking, mountain biking) are better than any city in the West because they are close, accessible, and affordable.
