Week in the life of PGY-1, Hana Setterquist, MD

MONDAY Vacation day! I took off today to enjoy a long weekend celebrating my completion of STEP-3. Today I woke up in my tent in Maple Canyon with my partner and French bulldog, Olive. We packed up the site then spent the day sport climbing on some of the best sport routes in Utah--only 90 minutes from Salt Lake City! I tried hard and had fun. Tonight we picked up our favorite pizza from Via 313 on our way home.
TUESDAY I am on consult service at Intermountain Healthcare Hospital this month. I get into work around 9am and round with a nurse practitioner, social worker, and psychiatrist. When we get new consults I will go see the patient and come up with a plan that I present to the team. I have some very interesting patients here with medically complex conditions. So far I have seen catatonia, conversion disorder, and even neurocysticercosis. Free lunch is a perk, too! I finished up around 3 and ran some errands before settling down at home and working on a new piano piece I am learning.
WEDNESDAY Didactics day. We had lectures and journal club at HMHI from 9:30-3. Today we learned about anxiety drugs. After work I went to the climbing gym with my partner then had friends over for enchiladas and a tv show.
THURSDAY Back at the hospital for consults. I really enjoy consult service—it’s a great blend of psychiatry and medicine and has kept my medical knowledge fresh. Today I even recommended a patient be tested for sickle cell anemia. Climbed with my partner and cozied up for a quiet dinner and movie night.
FRIDAY Yay it’s almost the weekend! We got a few new patients today and I had a good discussion with the attending about the ethics of transplant surgery in patients with substance use disorders. After work I plan to go back to Maple Canyon for a climbing weekend with some friends. I am so grateful for all the free time I have had this month to do the things I love outdoors.
