The Adult Division of the Department of Psychiatry is honored to be an integral part of the University of Utah’s Health Sciences. The Division comprises more than 55 full-time faculty, including 22 researchers, and 115 adjunct faculty. Of the full-time and adjunct faculty, over 25 are affiliates at the VA Salt Lake City Health Care System. We are known for our devotion to advancing mental health care through academic distinction, collaborative, relevant research, and compassionate behavioral and mental health care.
Academic Programs
Exceptional education and training of psychiatrists and other mental health professionals are a critical part of the Adult Division’s mission. The Division provides a rigorous, fully-accredited Adult Psychiatry residency program. Additionally, we collaborate with the Division of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry and the Department of Pediatrics to support an interdisciplinary Triple Board residency. The benchmark of the Triple Board program is cross-training in adult psychiatry, child psychiatry, and pediatrics. We also offer one-year, post-residency fellowships focused on the sub-specialties of addiction psychiatry and addiction medicine.
Research
Our strong research program focuses on translational research aimed at improving early diagnostic tools, developing innovative therapies and technologies, and approaching brain and behavioral wellness with greater sophistication. Our group of renowned researchers investigate areas including genetics, neuroimaging, women’s health, brain development, specific adult and geriatric issues, mood disorders, substance abuse, and treatment innovation. Adult Division faculty are dedicated to pioneering scientific exploration and discovery in order to advance treatment and prevention of brain diseases and behavioral disorders. The program provides ongoing community education and public outreach to providers, families, and those with mental illnesses.
Patient Care
Faculty of the Adult Division are skilled clinicians who treat all types of psychiatric conditions across a complete spectrum of services. Every day we dedicate ourselves to delivering excellence in all of our adult patient care programs. Because of this, 35 of our psychiatrists are nationally-ranked in the top 10% for patient satisfaction. We offer direct patient care at several sites within the University of Utah Health system and throughout the community. Clinical sites include the Huntsman Mental Health Institute (formerly the University Neuropsychiatric Institute) for inpatient services, the University of Utah Hospital, the Huntsman Cancer Institute at the University of Utah, eight University of Utah community clinics, University of Utah Behavioral Health Clinic for outpatient services, and the VA Salt Lake City Health Care System.
